Mac mini is a desktop Mac which is perfect for the Apple beginners who wish to embrace the practical experience, but do not want to spend a hot dollar on it. The price must be a somewhat attracting point; though this is officially the slowest device in the range of Apple’s desktops – iMac and Mac Pro. But fear not, it remains fast enough for general use like surfing the web, playing music and editing short videos.
Apple seems to hook mostly first-time Mac users on the Mac mini, but long-time Mac users may also love the price and use Mac mini as a server or an entertainment Mac connected to the TV.
The last Mac mini was released in October 2014 so it might sound slightly outdated. Though three years is a long time for a standard PC, in reality, it can serve you much longer. Unfortunately, we are not the only ones who know nothing about Apple’s plans for the next Mac mini. Maybe they will come up with something as good as HP’s Pavilion Wave, sleek, small, with multiple extensions and speakers. But you never know.
Today, Mac mini is the most affordable option in Apple’s computer range, and the only other Mac available for users on the budget is the MacBook Air that is just under $1000.
There are three versions of the Mac mini.
Dual-Core Core i5 processor with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz, 4 GB of memory, a hard drive with a capacity of 50,000 rpm, built-in graphics processor Intel HD Graphics 5000.
Dual-Core Core i5 processor with a clock speed of 2.6, 8 GB of RAM, a hard drive with a capacity of 5,400 rpm, built-in graphics processor Intel Iris.
Dual-Core processor Core i5 with a clock speed of 2.8 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive, integrated graphics card Intel Iris.
Mac mini comes solo and to use it as your regular PC you’ll need a display, keyboard and a mouse of your own. But you can snap these additional devices online at the checkout for an extra fee.
Also, Mac mini doesn’t have an optical drive, so for those who will want to use CD or DVD, there’s only one option – buying external USB drive.
Mac mini supports Wi-Fi and has embedded Bluetooth. It’s lumped with 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports, and an SDXC card slot. It has a one Gigabit Ethernet port for wired network connection.
If you need to connect the display to your Mac mini, be sure to check which port your display has and in case it doesn’t match the one on the Mac mini – order an additional port at the Apple Store. For example, for the VGA and DVI output, you will need a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter or a Mini DisplayPort-to DVI adapter which comes at a reasonable price.
Mac mini is not here to set any speed records, and no high-performance is anywhere to be seen, but this shouldn’t be an issue for those with simple demands. It’s a portable machine that can serve you well if you know what’s the max limit. Apparently, something of a general use of essay writing and emails and liking posts on social networks won’t cause any problems, but we do not recommend doing intensive graphics work.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BUYING MAC MINI
Undoubtedly it’s the best choice for undemanding users, a gadget that is both portable and sleek. Mac mini can become an excellent machine if Apple bothers to refresh it. But in the meantime, if you are settled with what it offers – go and get it from the Apple Store right now!
